Message from Dr. Williams

Dr Williams Photo.jpgDear Parents, Faculty, and Staff:

As Principal of Twain Elementary, I enthusiastically welcome back our returning Twain families and staff members.  I would also like to take a moment to welcome our new families and staff members into our awesome Twain family.  Although our new staff members are new to Twain, each one of them comes to Twain with numerous years of teaching experience in Long Beach Unified School District.  At Twain we are known for working together as a family, and I know that our Twain community will excitedly welcome our new families and staff members into our existing Twain family.  The next time you are on campus, please join me in welcoming our new staff members...

Veterans Day Celebration, November 10

Veterans Day 2016.jpgWe are excited to announce our Tenth Annual Mark Twain Veterans Day Tribute. The ceremony to honor our Veterans will take place on Thursday, November 10th, 2016. This celebration will help further educate our students about the important role our veterans have played and continue to play in the great history of our country. Please look for more information to follow.

Parent-Student Handbook: Clarification and Updates

In reference to the Parent-Student Handbook, please make note of the following:

(1) The Safe and Civil form is on yellow paper.

(2) The Consent and Release from Liability is not included in the packet.  The Consent and Release from Liability is already on file in the office for all returning Twain students and students new to Twain.

(3) Please disregard the note about Prep Day Differences on the Bell Schedule.

(4) An "Emergency Card Print Out" page was not included in the packet.  Parents must access ParentVue to update emergency information.

(5) Erica Dawson is last year's President; Star Behain is our current PTA President.

After School Care

Since we did not secure enough funds to have after school supervision for the 2016-2017 school year, starting on September 1st, 2016 all students in grades 1-5 must be picked up on or before 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Since TK/Kinder students adhere to a different bell schedule throughout the school year - Early Bird/Late Bird -  Kinder teachers will be in communication with Kinder parents about the Early Bird/Late Bird schedules.

before you start school shopping

As you get ready to go shopping for the new school year, please take a moment to brush up on Twain’s uniform policy and dress code. You can find the details here, but please keep in mind that – with the exception of shirts and outerwear displaying our school name and/or mascot that are purchased here at Twain – all shirts must be solid navy blue, red or white with no cartoons or drawings of any kind. All pants or skirts must be dark navy blue and in good condition (no tears, etc.). Footwear must cover the entire foot, no open-toed or open-heeled styles or high heels are allowed. By adhering to this dress code, we are creating a safe environment where our children can focus on becoming Twain scholars. Reviewing these requirements will potentially save you the money and hassle of purchasing school clothes that your child will be unable to wear. Thank you for your cooperation!

School Site Council 2016-2017

Congratulations to our new School Site Council (SSC) parent members. Ann Marie Alvarez and Star Behain will join other parent and staff members on our 2016-2017 School Site Council (SSC) board.  The purpose of the Council is to serve as an advisory committee for the principal in making decisions regarding the school's budget and instructional programs.

Box Tops for Education

Calling all BOX TOPS! Thanks to Box Tops For Education, a quick snip of the scissors can earn money for our school. Look for box tops on items you already purchase, clip them out, and turn them into the Twain office throughout the year. You can follow this link for a list of participating products, or simply search your kitchen for the box top image below. Each box top earns ten cents, and they can really add up for our students.

Coyote Sightings

Several parents have reported concern about coyotes in Long Beach.  At this time, we are working with School Safety to ensure that our students are safe at Mark Twain Elementary School.  If you happen to see a coyote near our school during school hours, please contact our school's office so we can contact the appropriate agencies.  For more information about safety and prevention, please visit this link.

The scary season has arrived – and the Press-Telegram wants to be spooked.

The newspaper is again launching its popular Scary Stories contest for Long Beach area youth. Winning entries – both stories and artwork – will be published in the Press-Telegram on Halloween, Oct. 31.

The rules are the same as last year: there will be three age categories for stories and drawings: Elementary school (K-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12).

Here are the rules:

• The deadline is Oct. 24.
• All entries must be emailed, with the subject line “Scary Stories,” to: ptnews@presstelegram. Stories can be submitted in the body of the email, or as a Word attachment; drawings should be submitted in JPEG format, no larger than 5MG in size.
• Stories must be no longer than 650 words.
• Artwork must be original (no tracings)
• Entries will be judged based on imagination, creativity and theme.
• The winning entries will be published in the Press-Telegram on Oct. 31, and posted online.

If you have any questions, e-mail Press-Telegram City Editor Melissa Evans at mevans@scng.com or call 562-499-1280.
