WELCOME TO TWAIN!
Greetings Twain Families & Community Members,
As we begin the new school year, I'm excited to reconnect with our returning students and to meet the newest members of the Twain community joining us this year. As teachers, staff, parents and community partners, our collaboration is essential to the success of these young scholars who will do great things both while they are here at Twain and far beyond. I know their growth and long term success is the highest priority for us all, so I'm excited to share with you a bit of what our teachers and I have been working on this summer.

D.O.G.S. Holiday Food Drive 2015
The D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) are reaching out to the Mark Twain Family in an effort to help fight hunger this holiday season. We wanted this donation to stay close to our local community so we have partnered with the Long Beach Rescue Mission who will prepare and serve the food in the local area. With so many families and individuals in need this year, the gift of food seems to be a wonderful way we can help our community.
We are not asking you to go out and buy food for this donation, unless you would like to. All we ask is that you reach into your cabinet or pantry and pull out a few items you can give. Here are some ideas: Canned Turkey or Ham, Canned Vegetables, Cranberry Sauce or Yams, Stuffing or Mashed Potato Mix and Coffee. Even if you can only give one can of food, your donation is appreciated.
Please send your child with your non-perishable gift the week of November 16th through the 20th. The D.O.G.S. will be going to each classroom, collecting all food items, and thanking the children for their contributions during the morning of Friday, November 20th.
Although we have partnered with the mission, we know there may be some Twain families in need as well. If you, or someone you know, needs help this holiday please contact Principal Dr. Williams. Your request and name will remain anonymous.
Thank you in advanced for your kind donation.
Box Tops for Education
Calling all BOX TOPS! Thanks to Box Tops For Education, a quick snip of the scissors can earn money for our school. Look for box tops on items you already purchase, clip them out, and turn them into the Twain office throughout the year. You can follow this link for a list of participating products, or simply search your kitchen for the box top image below. Each box top earns ten cents, and they can really add up for our students.
Traffic on Sunfield
Parents, please be cognizant of parking and pedestrians, especially during school hours. This afternoon, it was reported that a truck's front end was sticking out in the roadway on Sunfield and several motorists came close to hitting the improperly parked vehicle. It was also reported that another motorist came close to running into one of our parents walking across the street. Our goal is for us all to be safe at Twain, so please practice proper safety rules for motorists and pedestrians, especially in a school zone.
Several parents have reported concern about coyotes in Long Beach. At this time, we are working with School Safety to ensure that our students are safe at Mark Twain Elementary School. If you happen to see a coyote near our school during school hours, please contact our school's office so we can contact the appropriate agencies. For more information about safety and prevention, please visit this link.

after school supervision 2015-2016
Thank you to all of the parents who assisted us with funding the after school supervision program for the 2014-2015 school year. Because of your help we were able to keep this program up and running last year.
Currently, we have secured enough funds to keep the program up and running for the Fall Semester (September 2015 - December 2015) only. If you would like to have this service available for the Spring Semester (January 2016 - June 2016), please think about making a monetary donation so that this service could be available for the entire school year. Any excess funds will be rolled over for the following semester. If we are unable to secure the necessary funding, all Spring 2016 donations will be returned to the parents who donated money.
Please feel free to stop by our school's office to complete the necessary paperwork to make a donation. We will continue to keep you updated regarding this service.
